We cordially invite you to an evening of solidarity with the FreeCongo Collective team! On this evening you will learn more about the current situation in Goma and the important work with internally displaced people on the ground. Sarah from Kollektiv will explain the current context and Dorcas from Kollektiv will talk about her recent trip to Goma in December and give insights into her work with Focus Congo e.V. and Goma Aktiv.
The ongoing conflict in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo has recently come to a dramatic head with the conquest of Goma and Bukavu, among other places, by the M23 rebels. Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced and the humanitarian situation is catastrophic. The European Union has condemned the M23 attacks and is calling on Rwanda to stop supporting the rebels and withdraw its troops from the Congo. Germany has also reacted to the escalating violence and suspended development aid talks with Rwanda.
In addition to analyzing the current situation, we want to discuss together what options for action there are - also from here. Together with numerous partners, the FreeCongo Collective organized a successful fundraising campaign for menstrual hygiene at the end of last year, which directly benefited the affected women and girls in Goma. However, the collective is also continuously involved in various aid campaigns.
