The small seaside resort of Amity Island is plagued by a voracious shark that also likes to eat the occasional human. Despite a few deaths, the local mayor (Murray Hamilton) doesn't want to know anything about it, however; profit from the upcoming bathing season and tourism has priority. He forbids the chief of police, Martin Brody (Roy Scheider), to close the beach. Only when a child is killed does the mayor react. The beach is cordoned off for a day and search parties are sent out to find the shark. As the child's mother puts a bounty on the shark's head, the town is swarming with people the next day. Everyone wants to find and kill the monster, and huge numbers of people board boats and set off in pursuit of the shark. The hunt soon seems to be successful, one shark is killed and the townspeople and the mayor breathe a sigh of relief!
