A Hutsul village in northern Bukovina during the Second World War: the brothers of the Zvonar family earn a living as musicians until the war separates them. Petro fights in the Red Army, Orest in the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.
At the center of the film is a parable: The old folk tale of the stork, the "white bird with the black spot", which was once a human being and can only return to its original form once it has collected and destroyed all the evil on this earth.
