Thomas Mann: "The Magic Mountain" - musical reading
Ralf Knapp and Michael Rettig
Thomas Mann's "Magic Mountain" will be 100 years old in 2024/25. Conceived as a novella, a light-hearted counterpart to "Death in Venice", "The Magic Mountain" is one of the great novels of classical modernism. A brief visit to a sanatorium in Davos turns into a seven-year stay for the young Hans Castorp. The time-warped mountain and sanatorium world, with its atmosphere of illness and death, becomes a stage for the European state of mind before the First World War and for fascinating reflections on the phenomenon of time.
No one can escape the boredom of the Magic Mountain. No amount of "grand reclining service", sumptuous meals, erotic adventures or "brass music" from the spa band can help. A "great irritation" is spreading more and more.....
"Ralf Knapp delights the audience with his lively and never faltering performance, almost as if "out of sheer grit", and this for an impressive one and a half hours until the interval"...., wrote the reviewer at a performance in the Peine Theater, visibly impressed.
