A jug breaks in Husum: at first glance it appears to be a manageable amount of damage, but in reality there is much more at stake. Eve's reputation seems to be in just as much danger as her engagement to Ruprecht. What was the village magistrate Adam doing with Marthe's daughter? Why is Adam in hospital with a damaged foot and scratches on his face? The obvious is so obvious: Adam has of course been harassing the young woman in her home, is surprised by Ruprecht and suffers the injuries when he subsequently jumps out of the window. Nevertheless, the village community, supported by a cemented hierarchy and a good dose of patriarchy, manages to look past the truth. This goes well until the new court clerk Walter arrives. Adam now goes on the attack in public. The protagonist's audacity awakens an all too familiar feeling in us; those with power (and/or money) can sometimes get away with the biggest lie. The truth is overlooked, while the active shirking of responsibility is often applauded.
