Georg-Friedrich Handel (1685 - 1759): Dixit Dominus
Thomas Jennefelt (*1954): Dixit Dominus - in the name of God
July 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre. Thomas Jennefelt dedicated his work "Dixit Dominus - in the name of God" to the "Women in Black of Srebrenica", the surviving wives, mothers, sisters and daughters of the more than 8,000 murdered Muslim boys and men. In the concert, Jennefelt's highly expressive sounds of pain, anger and despair meet the baroque festive music of Georg-Friedrich Handel's "Dixit Dominus", which also served to glorify the Catholic Church against the backdrop of the Ottoman wars. Both compositions are performed intertwined: Sparkling coloraturas and affects alternate with powerful rhythms, clusters and chanting.
Part of the concert is an in-depth discussion with Christian Schmidt (UN High Representative in Bosnia-Herzegovina) and Dr. Franjo Komarica (Bishop Emeritus of Banja Luka) about the risks of the political misuse of art and religion as well as the opportunities for dialogue, understanding and reconciliation. The discussion will be moderated by Hélèna Bresser (John Sheppard Ensemble).
