DIDO AND AENEAS... ERWARTUNG

In the organizer's words:

Composer Henry Purcell / Arnold Schönberg.

Opera in three acts / monodrama in one act (1688/89; 1909) with an interlude by Paweł Mykietyn

In English and German with German and English surtitles.

On the edge of a forest, a woman named Dido lives in a house that does not belong to her. She is a refugee. Nothing is known about her except that she comes from far away. Past and present, reality and fantasy are so intertwined in her life that it is impossible to tell whether the mysterious figures and evil spirits that appear from time to time inhabit the forest or her spirit. Dido loves Aeneas, who, like her, is a stranger. Dido's companion Belinda also plays a role in this love story, which becomes a love story of three people. The evening tells the old story of jealousy and loneliness, and of a woman in search of herself.

Director Krzysztof Warlikowski tells the story of this woman in Dido and Aeneas... Expectation tells the story of this woman. He combines the baroque opera Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell (circa 1688/89) with the expressionist monodrama Erwartung by Arnold Schönberg (1909) and mirrors the two stories in a psychologically complex way.
The female role will be interpreted by the renowned soprano Ausrine Stundyte, who is once again a guest at the Bavarian State Opera. For conductor Andrew Manze, this production is his house debut.

Krzysztof Warlikowski combines Dido and Aeneas... Expectation into a narrated musical theater evening without an intermission. The two works are linked by an interlude: an electronic interlude that also continues the plot and atmosphere of the musical theater evening in scenic and choreographic terms. The composer of the interlude is Paweł Mykietyn, with whom Krzysztof Warlikowski has a long-standing collaboration.
