Japan 1960, 151 min., b/w, OmU. Directed by Akira Kurosawa, written by Hideo Oguni, Eijirō Hisaita, Akira Kurosawa, Ryūzō Kikushima, Shinobu Hashimoto. FSK 16
The wedding of secretary Nishi (Toshirō Mifune) to Yoshiko, the daughter of his boss, a powerful industrial magnate, is not under a good star: planned as a magnificent celebration, the party, which is attended by numerous society reporters, turns into a full-blown scandal.
In this socially critical drama, Kurosawa paints a dark picture of his homeland after the war. It deals with the entanglements of politics and corporations and their consequences for democratic processes. He draws on motifs from William Shakespeare's drama Hamlet, among others. A film in the style of film noir.
