"... And the shark, he has teeth..."
The story of Macheath, the unscrupulous boss of a London gang of crooks, is a distanced portrayal of bourgeois society, including the demimonde and underworld, in which everyone involved, from the head of a begging group to the chief of police, acts for their own benefit. Business and instinct are the driving force. Kurt Weill's brilliant music, with its catchy melodies, captivating rhythms and special emotionality, plays a major part in the success of the three-act opera - which is not an opera, of course.
