Die Fledermaus

Set in the period after the Vienna stock market crash of 1873, Johann Strauss' champagne-soaked Die Fledermaus is the pièce de résistance of bourgeois operetta. In order to take revenge on his friend Eisenstein, Dr. Falke, alias "Die Fledermaus", stages an ingenious disguise game at one of the legendary soirées of the unapproachable Prince Orlofsky. Here, everyone is allowed to be whoever they want: single or married, noble or exotic. But watch out! Disguised with masks and false names, everyone can turn out to be a nasty surprise: The next morning, all masks fall in the barren prison cell of reality.

Die Fledermaus not only makes the champagne bubble with sound, it also bubbles over with irony and subtle allusions. Director Kathrin Kondaurow sets the story in a grand hotel before the great turning point of 1914 and confronts the bourgeois protagonists with an artistic avant-garde that will radically change their society. Nostalgic waltzes are never sweeter than just before the downfall!
