Scientist Seth Brundle successfully experiments with teleportation, the transfer of matter from one place to another. One day, he undertakes a self-experiment that has catastrophic consequences. During the teleportation, a housefly had strayed into the laboratory - and now the body atoms of the two have mixed. Gradually, Seth begins to transform into a disgusting and dangerous mutant.
