The wives of the rulers of Hanover operated within the framework of predetermined gender roles: as mothers, benefactors, fashion icons. While some meticulously adhered to the respective frameworks, others overstepped boundaries - and earned the scorn of their contemporaries.
Dr. Annika Wellmann is a freelance historian and curator. Her interests include social, gender and media history as well as the history of Hanover.
