Chicago 1930: the cattle exchange is controlled by the "meat king" Mauler, the factories are closed. Johanna Dark wants to help the starving workers, she wants to know who is to blame for their misery. During her three trips "into the depths", she meets Mauler and believes she can convert him to humanity. At first, he wants to reopen the factories and provide the workers with wages and bread again. But Johanna was deceived. The cold, the poverty, the hunger of the workers - Mauler accepts them when he sees the chance to blackmail the other meat factory owners. Johanna comes to the realization that only "violence helps where there is violence"! But she can no longer be heard, she is drowned out by the chants of the capitalists, who declare her, now that she is ineffective, a martyr, their "St. Joan of the Slaughterhouses".
