"I'd rather hatch an egg than tend a porridge."
Mr. and Mrs. Smith sit by the fire in the evening and talk about mundane, banal things. Finally, Mr. and Mrs. Martin come to visit. They don't seem to know each other and only realize that they are husband and wife after an awkward demonstration. The conversations between the two couples become increasingly absurd. Then there is the maid Mary, who believes she is Sherlock Holmes, and a fireman who is politely looking for a fire to put out. The characters become increasingly entangled in a linguistic maelstrom of bizarre dialog and nonsense sentences, until finally they can only produce single vowels and consonants.
The French-Romanian author Eugène Ionesco is considered one of the most important French playwrights of the post-war period. His first play, 'The Bald Singer', written in 1948 and premiered two years later, marked the birth of the Theater of the Absurd. With this one-act play, Joachim Gottfried Goller makes his directorial debut at Schauspiel Wuppertal.
