Dumas' novel "The Lady of the Camellias" is a prime example of the romanticization of illness as a metaphor. Marguerite, a seamstress and courted courtesan, is suffering from tuberculosis. Her suffering is metaphorically linked to their love affair: When the couple is united, even the illness does not seem so severe. But after their separation, her condition worsens and she dies - but not of a broken heart. Narratives that are still virulent today: the glorification of life with a chronic illness. Malin Lamparter takes these romantic notions ad absurdum - somewhere between show and enlightenment, reality check and grotesque. What does dependence on medical care mean? And how do you deal with it when you are perceived as an element of non-functioning?
