A colony of cats has settled at the Gokogu Shintō shrine in Ushimado. Locals and strangers alike look after the animals at the shrine, which are a source of joy but also of daily annoyance. Filmmaker Kazuhiro Soda observes the hustle and bustle at the site and the interactions and encounters that take place there with great calm and attention. In the cycle of the seasons, a comprehensive picture emerges of a community that, despite all its differences and problems, is intact and maintains its existence through tireless voluntary care work.
Kazuhiro Soda calls his method "observational filmmaking", which is based on historical "direct cinema" and for which there is a specially formulated set of rules: no research, operate the camera yourself, use long takes, finance the production yourself.
