Coriolanus
by William Shakespeare
About the play
He is good at war, but not at politics and certainly not at democracy: the Roman general Caius Martius is a fighter, a hero, who almost single-handedly defeated rebellious Volscians in a battle near the city of Corioli. As a reward, he is given the epithet Coriolanus and is to be appointed Roman consul. However, the previously appointed tribunes of the people insist that he publicly and humbly asks to be elected. Asking the plebeians for their votes - an imposition for Coriolanus! On the slippery political stage of the Roman Republic, he arrogantly and stubbornly falls into every political trap. Even his mother, who would rather have a dead than unsuccessful son and wants to promote his political career behind the scenes, cannot change his mind. In order to save Rome from HIM, he is sent into exile, where he joins forces with Volscian leader Aufidius, of all people, to march against Rome. His decisions are characterized more by narcissism and arrogance than by political conviction and strategic foresight. In the end, he is killed as a traitor. Coriolanus' character alternates between brutal, ridiculous and tragic. The comedic and effective play presents the Roman drama as a political satire with contemporary references to the political actions of autocratic leaders today. Questions about the resilience of democratic structures and the sincerity of political action are at the heart of the production.
The bilingual production combines the scenic styles of the Tiyatro BeReZe and the bsc - from physical theater to storytelling, from object theater to clown performance.
The bilingual production combines the scenic styles of the Tiyatro BeReZe and the bsc - from physical theater to storytelling, from object theater to clown performance. The two ensembles develop an expressive "performance language" of theater that works without overhead translations and look forward to bringing German and Turkish audiences together. In 2016 and 2018, Tiyatro BeReZe was a guest at the bremer shakespeare company with its production of "Macbeth - A Nightmare For Two" for two actors. In joint workshops, the two ensembles discovered the different possibilities in the performance practice of a Shakespeare drama.
