Danae is to marry rich in order to pay off her father's debts. Everyone here dreams of gold, Danae most of all. A powerful man takes an interest in her and sends someone else before her: A suitable husband seems to have been found. But his wealth is linked to a condition that stands in the way of happiness. Danae must, Danae can decide between wealth and love, between dream and life, between the promises of the one and "the sentient heart's eternal gift".

The"cheerful mythology" of The Love of Danae reassembles various legends and figures from ancient Greece and tells the story of a woman who successfully asserts herself and her love against raison d'état and the arbitrariness of the gods. What seems unthinkable in the setting of similar material in the Baroque period, what leads to the downfall of Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, is possible here: the god steps aside and clears the way for the happiness of two people. Framed by a cast of comic characters and music that constantly glitters with the gold that everyone is chasing after.

With a large orchestra and great sounds, Richard Strauss looks back on motifs from his own operas and music history in his late work. He did not live to see the premiere in 1952. After the work was last restaged at the Bavarian State Opera in 1988, a team led by Strauss connoisseurs Claus Guth (director) and Sebastian Weigle (musical director) is now interpreting it.
