Under the patronage of the Royal Danish Embassy in Berlin

From July 4, 2025, the Bröhan Museum will present the exhibition "The Magic of Glaze", which is dedicated to the important Danish ceramic artist Nils Thorsson (1898-1975) and the stoneware department of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Copenhagen. In addition, Thorsson's artistic environment - Danish art ceramics from the 1930s to the 1970s - is highlighted with works by Jais Nielsen, Patrick Nordström and Axel Salto, among others. The exhibition introduces visitors to the fascinating world of fine glazes that have created artistic and unique surfaces through the interplay of earth and fire.

Selected works are presented that impressively demonstrate the diversity and depth of classic glazes such as celadon, oxblood and temmoku. The exhibition illustrates how traditional techniques from classical China have been reinterpreted and further developed by Nils Thorsson and others. The glazed objects are characterized by their extraordinary depth of colour and luminosity and reveal the aesthetic power of ceramic art.

The accompanying book project by collector and ceramics expert Jörg Schwandt delves deeper into the subject and invites you to experience the sensual effect of the glazes from a new perspective. Without overly technical explanations, the book introduces readers to the magic of glazes through lively descriptions and impressive photographs. The exhibition not only offers an art-historical insight, but also inspires an intensive perception of materiality and color.
