'Hey, you there!' shouts a policeman as I walk down the street. I turn around. Is my pulse increasing? Do I wonder if I've done something wrong? Does my flight reflex kick in or do I finally feel safe? The stories differ here, depending on who I am, how I am read, whether and how I fit into society. Based on this situation, THE POLICE AND ME examines the moment of the individual's encounter with the police and their vulnerability. The stage becomes a space for observation, alienation and reflection: a young person reports on their internship with the police. A festival visitor experiences a vehicle check. A man wants to pick someone up from the airport and gets into a physical altercation with the police. A woman is reluctant to call 110 after a sexual assault. Two police officers are called to a hostage situation. Different perspectives, situations and worlds of experience enter into a dialog with each other. The central question is what encounters with the police tell us about social interaction.
The theater evening, which was created on the basis of interviews, premiered at TD Berlin in spring 2023. The research team spoke with political activists and police officers, but also with people who have had very different experiences with the police in everyday situations. The stage languages are German and English. Three performers take on all the roles. Text-based acting and choreographic sequences intertwine.
The DIE POLIZEI UND ICH team is an association of freelance theater makers. Their first joint work was the research-based solo performance VERSCHWÖRT EUCH! (2021). It was invited to the COMMON PLACES - TAGE FÜR PARTIZIPATION UND THEATER festival in 2022 and selected for the kaleidoskop kinder+jugentheatertage program in the same year. The focus of their joint work is on socio-political issues that are viewed from a variety of perspectives. Their joint plays are the result of extensive research in which the entire team is involved. Interviews play a central role. Fields of experimentation include interaction with the audience and the combination of acting with choreographic elements. The working languages are German, English and Korean.
For the TRIGGER festival, the actress and dancer Anna Mrachkovska joins the stage team for the first time with the actresses Judith Florence Ehrhardt and Mareile Metzner. Sound designer Haesoo Eshu Jung, author and dramaturge Janette Mickan, set designer Soojin Oh and director Sarah Johanna Steinfelder have also been part of the team since THE POLICE AND YOU! For DIE POLIZEI UND ICH, the group worked together with choreographer Beatriz Silva Aranda for the first time and pursued a physical approach alongside the text work.
