After the sudden death of his son, Samid decides to restore his old Soviet-era cinema projector. He dreams of reuniting his Azerbaijani village in front of the screen after thirty years. A big challenge, because the projector lamp is broken, the skeptical moral guardians in the village have to be convinced and the last roll of the only available 35mm film print is missing. But Samid finds support in his equally film-loving grandson, who quickly reshoots the last reel of the film with his own cell phone. They stubbornly and imaginatively pursue their plan, which leads to a turbulent, if not magical, night.

Director Orhkan Aghazadeh returns to his home region on the border between Azerbaijan and Iran. He paints a loving portrait of the inhabitants of a remote mountain village that has been left behind by the times. His protagonist Samid was the village's projectionist during the Soviet era. A respected man, as the cinema played a central role - as a propaganda machine, but also as the social center of the community. Although filmed entirely as a documentary, THE RETURN OF THE FILM PROGRADER resembles a classic feature film that accompanies its protagonists with a great deal of empathy and dry humor in their utopian project to recall those times.
