The eternal ice at the polar ice caps is one of the great fascinations, but also threats, of mankind. In one of his most complex fairy tales, Danish author Hans Christian Andersen sends two children into this inhospitable region and gives the threat a human face: that of the Snow Queen. The frosty ruler abducts little Kay into the mirrored halls of her castle at the North Pole. Unaware of the dangers, Gerda sets off in search of her lost playmate. She encounters a robber girl, talking crows, a kindly prince and princess, helpful wood pigeons and a reindeer who leads her closer and closer to the North Pole and thus to Kay.

Andersen's fairy tale from the 19th century is a wondrous road movie that has nothing less than the deepest bond of friendship as its destination.
