While populists all over the world are undermining the free legal order, we still believe our democracy is invulnerable. The enemies of democratic diversity are abusing the law under the pretext of representing the true interests of the people. What threatens Germany? Maximilian Steinbeis, a lawyer and controversial expert on all constitutional issues, uses the example of Thuringia to show how populists could destroy the liberal state by abusing laws and institutions: schools and universities, the judiciary and police, the media and the arts. There is little time left to defend our freedom against these attacks. Maximilian Steinbeis raises our awareness of the threats to our free society.

MaximilianSteinbeis, born in 1970, studied law and initially worked as an editor for the Handelsblatt. He has also published literary texts. Since 2009, he has been running "Verfassungsblog", a blog in which international authors discuss academic issues at the interface between politics and law. His most recent publications include: "Mit Rechten reden. Ein Leitfaden" (with Per Leo and Daniel-Pascal Zorn, 2017) and "Die Zauberlehrlinge. Der Streit um die Flüchtlingspolitik und der Mythos vom Rechtsbruch" (with Stephan Detjen, 2019).
