In order to put a stop to Alberich's quest for power, Wotan, the father of the gods, has fathered nine Valkyries who are to gather an army of fallen heroes for him in Valhalla. His son Siegmund, born of a union with a human woman, is to recapture the ring for him as a freeborn hero. But unknowingly and against Wotan's plans, Siegmund falls in love with his twin sister Sieglinde and conceives Siegfried with her. When Wotan's favorite daughter Brünnhilde, out of pity, defies her father's order to abandon Siegmund to his doom, he banishes her to a rock of fire from which only the strongest hero can rescue her. This hero will be Siegfried.
