The Russian war in Ukraine threatens to turn into a bitter war of attrition. With Trump in the USA and Putin in Russia, there seems to be no solution in sight. What happens next?

The war between Russia and Ukraine has been raging for more than three years. In the middle of Europe. Attempts to reach peace negotiations have so far been in vain. Diplomatic efforts by the EU, China and other countries have been nipped in the bud.

The new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is practising fading solidarity with the heads of state and government of the UK, France and Poland. Sanctions against Putin are not taking effect or are taking effect too late. Attempts at mediation are becoming the plaything of a regime whose goal is clearly not just the incorporation of Ukraine.
