The five-piece band came together at the end of 2015 and released their debut EP the following year. Over time, there were a few line-up changes, but since their breakthrough tracks "Gayboy", "Total 90" and the cover version of Peaches' "Fuck The Pain Away" in 2019, the band has been able to establish itself. Even though the lockdowns during the pandemic dampened their momentum for a while, they used the time off to refine their strong debut album.

"The Great Regression" could be one of the most important British guitar debuts of the year. The first single "Ded Würst" - a wild mix of Gilla Band, Foals, and a lyric lamenting the moral dilemma of minimum wage employment - unsurprisingly became an instant favorite of Steve Lamacq at BBC Radio 6 Music.

Themes of insecurity and gender recur throughout the album, as do many references to the human body being violated in unnatural ways. However, there was no overarching concept beforehand, the songs were written over a very long period of time. The title is less an allusion to a backward-looking society than to the band's penchant for infantile jokes. "Sitting in a van all day can be pretty silly," laughs singer Cal Francis.
