Dive in

In the organizer's words:

Dive in - Workshops on subcultures of the queer community - as part of "Fokus: Queer Art" - on May 10, 2025 at 12 noon - Schauspielhaus, Foyer

Take it to the Runway - workshop on voguing and ballroom culture with Ray (choreographer and Shapes & Shades collective member)

Ballroom culture emerged in New York in the 1970s. As a safe space, especially for Black, Indigenous and Latinx people from the queer community, ballrooms are important places for free self-expression and a sense of community. A defining element of this culture is the dance style "Voguing" - inspired by model poses from the magazine "Vogue". In this workshop, Ray, who teaches at tanzhaus NRW and elsewhere, will explain the history and current relevance of ballroom culture and provide practical insights into the various elements of voguing.

When is a man a man - workshop on drag kinging as a queer-feminist practice with Willie Eyelash (drag king and theater maker)

In our society, masculinity is often seen as desirable, especially in the professional environment where it is rewarded and associated with attributes such as strength and assertiveness. But what is this masculinity anyway? Who does it belong to? And what happens when we appropriate it, subvert it or even transform it?

Drag kinging is a traditional art form in which artists bring male gender attributes to the stage. In this workshop, Drag King Willie Eyelash shows how we can play with masculinity(ies), how much gender performance is actually part of our everyday lives and what emancipatory possibilities lie in playing with stereotypes.
