Dokumentarfilm: Andreas Dresen – Ein Leben für den Film

In the organizer's words:

A film by Jana von Rautenberg
Arte 52 minutes, MDR 90 minutes

Andreas Dresen, a true storyteller, is one of the most successful German directors. Awarded numerous prizes by jury members and critics at festivals, his films are also very successful with cinema audiences, although they often show social reality rather than glossy romance. The artist, who was born in Gera in 1963 and grew up in Schwerin, has no problem with being described as an East German director. He knows where he comes from, what has shaped him, what and how he wants to tell people's stories.
The documentary accompanies the director through the year 2023 until the opening of the exhibition at the Filmmuseum Potsdam, which is honoring him and his team with an exhibition and film series. The portrait gradually reveals the career, artistic work and social commitment of the successful director. The film shows Dresen's complexity and his roots, which still shape him today: Childhood and youth in the GDR, studies in times of upheaval, directorial debut during the reunification period, holding political office and statements on flight, asylum or war. Andreas Dresen, an artist who gets involved and contributes to society.
The film accompanies the director to his home editing room in Potsdam, to the island of Hiddensee to visit his friend Jens Quandt, to Schwerin on tour with Alexander Scheer and his band and to the Schwielowsee with his sailing boat "Potemkin".
Numerous companions have their say, such as actor Axel Prahl, friend Jens Quandt, Dresen's long-time editor Jörg Hauschild, screenwriter Laila Stieler, cameraman Andreas Höfer and actress Steffi Kühnert. They all talk about the man, friend and colleague and reminisce about their intensive collaboration and their friendship with Andreas Dresen.
The documentary is a cooperation between arte and MDR.
