Don Quixote after Miguel de Cervantes
The journey of Donna Q
The impoverished country noblewoman Donna Q de la Mancha strives for the ideal of a traveling knight and, accompanied by her neighbor Sancha Panso, loses herself in countless adventures. She repeatedly falls prey to her delusions, which make her believe in the honor of knighthood and her own invincibility.
The odd couple achieve a bizarre fame, as most of their battles are hilariously lost. In the end, Donna Q is defeated in a major tournament and renounces her passion.
Miguel Cervantes' Don Quixote is an imaginative and brilliant exploration of morality, freedom and self-imposed roles. A wild, amusing but also disturbing ride through a past that is closer to us than we think. In powerful language, powerful images and with playful humor, the production poses the urgent questions: What does free will do to people when it grows into madness? How does the individual relate to socially prescribed role models?
Our opinionated information society makes it increasingly difficult to distinguish truths from fake news, opinions from knowledge - to appropriately counter the socially traditional role with individual behavior.
Teenagers and young adults in particular are often faced with difficult decisions in a complex, over-regulated world. With our production of Donna Q, we tackle the problem of how difficult it is to find one's own role in the structures of the world, how individual freedom and moral responsibility are interwoven - a challenge that is more relevant today than ever.
