Program:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Divertimento in E flat major KV 563
Gideon Klein: String Trio
Ludwig van Beethoven: String Trio in C minor op. 9/3
The internationally sought-after Franco-German cellist Nicolas Altstaedt has already cultivated his love of chamber music several times at the Musikfest: solo, as a duo and in an octet. Now he forms a top-class trio with violinist Ilya Gringolts and violist Lawrence Power. And the choice of these partners is probably due to the program. Mozart's only string trio, the Divertimento K. 563, was long considered unplayable. Its six movements, which also make it his longest chamber music work, require three high-ranking virtuosos to master the parts. With his String Trio op. 9/3, Beethoven reached almost symphonic dimensions and broke the mold of the genre as it had been known until then. With Gideon Klein, the artists recall one of the darkest chapters in cultural history: musical life in the Nazi concentration camps. The son of Czech Jews, interned in Theresienstadt from 1941, completed his string trio in October 1944, nine days before being transported to Auschwitz. It is more than remarkable how Klein composed joyful, life-oriented music under these circumstances ...
