Du bist so schön

In the organizer's words:

Choreographies by Liliana Barros, Aszure Barton and Sharon Eyal

"Linger, you are so beautiful" - this quote by Johann Wolfgang Goethe expresses the longing to capture a special moment. The title of this ballet evening refers both to the beauty of the art of dance and to its fleeting nature. Whether radically meditative, expressively playful or as a futuristic dance installation - the choreographers Liliana Barros, Aszure Barton and Sharon Eyal have found their own unique language of movement.

Liliana Barros is a multi-award-winning Portuguese choreographer who captivates audiences with her spirited, bizarre and technically sophisticated movements. In her highly visual creations, Liliana Barros combines the plasticity of the body with technical elements of dance in a deconstructed form. Based on this concept, in ARCHIUM the choreographer considers the human body as the collective memory of our species and as a place in which human history ultimately manifests itself. In the choreography, the electronic sounds of a commissioned composition by Vienna-based Martin Mitterstieler are combined with the abstract, dystopian stage space, which directs our gaze from antiquity to a time after the human-dominated age.

Canadian choreographer Aszure Barton is one of the most sought-after choreographers of her time. Taking up and revealing classical and contemporary forms of dance, she presents an energetic, humorous and multi-layered movement vocabulary that expresses the beauty, fragility and resilience of the human body. Her popular choreography Busk, created in 2009 as a full-length work for her own company (Aszure Barton & Artists), forms the centerpiece of the three-part ballet evening in an abridged version. The English verb "to busk" means to perform on the street or in other public areas in order to collect money from passers-by in the form of music, singing, juggling or magic. The title also refers to the Spanish root of the word "buscar", which means "to search". Based on these two terms, the choreography traces the reciprocal relationship between performance and audience, presenting the entire spectrum of movement of the dancer's body.

Between sensuality and ecstasy: Sharon Eyal is known for her minimalist aesthetics as well as her repetitive and highly intense movement patterns in her pieces. The renowned choreographer is regarded as a pioneer of contemporary dance and has received numerous awards for her works, which are part of the repertoire of major companies worldwide. For the three-part ballet evening Du bist so schön, Sharon Eyal has decided to rework her work Love, which was created over 20 years ago. Set to electro-acoustic sounds and complemented by a composition for piano and vocals by American singer Lisa Germano, the choreography invites us to discover the brutality and fragility of interpersonal relationships.
