At the age of 17, Effi Briest marries her mother's childhood flirt, Baron von Innstetten, who is 20 years her senior, and moves in with him in the gloomy, deserted Baltic seaside resort of Kessin. From this point on, her life is dominated by social obligations, boredom and fears. Instetten's house is considered to be haunted and its eerie apparitions deprive the young woman of sleep and the joy of life. "Actually" there is "absolutely nothing" to fear there, the Prussian district administrator Instetten repeatedly emphasizes - and fails to realize that the ghosts of the past also haunt him.
In Effi Briest, director Annette Müller deals with the unfinished business: where does the ghost of Fontane's militaristic male society haunt our ideas and determine how women* and men* should think, feel, act and desire?
