In an intense exploration of the themes of alienation and self-realization, "A Report for an Academy" takes us into the story of Rotpeter, a former ape who bears witness to his self-creation as a human being - or is this ultimately an illusion? Growing up on the Gold Coast, the ape is wounded and captured during a hunt by the Hagenbeck company. On a ship that takes him to the "civilized world", he accepts his fate and attempts to save himself. Over a long period of time, he receives both theoretical and practical lessons in human behavior, to which he devotes himself with great effort. He learns to smoke, drink and practise walking upright. But he suspects that he will find no equivalent in being human for the animal freedom he has to give up.
