Hermia loves Lysander, but her father wants her to marry Demetrius. Although Demetrius once had a crush on Helena, who still fancies him today, he is now courting Hermia. Amidst all the love confusion, only one thing is certain: if Hermia does not bow to her father's judgment, she faces death or banishment, as the laws in Athens are strict. And so Hermia flees with Lysander, pursued by Helena and Demetrius, into the nearby forest - a carnivalesque world of fairies that has been thrown out of joint by a quarrel between the royal couple. Here, the goblin Puck causes anarchic jokes and even more chaos among the lovers; here, a moderately talented troupe of craftsmen rehearse a tragicomic play; here, it is never quite clear whether the actors are still in their right minds, whether they are awake or dreaming ...
