The last film by director Jacque Demy, who was born in Nantes and achieved cult status with the musical film "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" with Catherine Deneuve, is a musical tragicomedy. All dialog is sung in a recitative-like manner. Reality and fiction combine to form an irritating structure of idiosyncratic lyricism in which feelings are described in a stylized, yet enlightening manner. "A Room in the City" is a "violent love story set against a backdrop of social violence", but according to Demy it is also an "eternal story", as there will always be fierce love passions and people fighting for change.
