A documentary that gives courage - Hidden Roma Heroes

Right-wing populists and right-wing extremists are getting stronger and stronger in Germany and around the world - this sometimes makes you feel helpless and powerless, but we want to give you courage and show you the 30-minute documentary "The Unseen Heroes - Roma Resisting Nazis" about two resistance fighters from the Sinti and Roma community.

As a forced laborer, Alfreda Noncia Markowska saved around 50 children from the Nazi genocide, even though she was on the death list herself as a Roma woman. The boxing star and Sinto Johann Rukeli Trollmann powdered his face white and bleached his hair during a boxing match in protest against Nazi ideology, even though this put his own life in danger.

The documentary not only looks at the resistance of the Sinti and Roma community during the Nazi era, but also shows how the community continues to fight against racism even after 1945.

The author Nadine Mena @michollek is a journalist at Deutsche Welle and belongs to the Roma community herself.

The Chilean artist Francisco Jorsiac drew the graphic elements of the film.

Following the documentary, there will be space for exchange, discussion and questions for the author Nadine Mena Michollek and the artist Francisco Jorsiac.
