The Dynamic Memory Lab "Cycles of Decolonization" invites its visitors to engage with a central theme of our culture of remembrance: European colonial history and decolonization.
In an immersive and interactive exhibition, visitors are confronted with the legacy of European colonialism and its contemporary manifestations. The exhibition places a special focus on the structures of dehumanization that are effective in the present. The exhibition aims to remove the invisibility associated with dehumanization and place the human at the center of our attention.
"Cycles of Decolonization" was developed under the curation of Cátia Severino and André Soares , with contributions from European artists, activists and scholars from the CPPD. The curators draw our attention to the continuities of European colonialism. Using the example of delivery drivers, they show us the contemporary manifestations of the legacy of European colonialism in the present day.
"Cycles of Decolonization" allows visitors to hear from delivery drivers themselves how their everyday lives are determined, what burdens are placed on them and what hopes they have. By looking at an example of ongoing exploitation dynamics, the exhibition opens up a space in which visitors can come to terms with their own social status and painful memories. It reveals that colonization is not a mere historical event, but a persistent structure of inequalities and hierarchies within European societies.
"Cycles of Decolonization" illustrates how contemporary economic systems can replicate colonial dynamics, even without the direct violence and territorial occupation associated with historical colonization.
