The opening concert is characterized by the close musical friendship that has connected Jan Vogler with Fabio Luisi for many years. When the conductor finally appears at the Dresden Music Festival with his famous Japanese top orchestra, a glittering evening is in store - all the more so as this concert brings together a highlight of the cello literature with one of the great symphonic masterpieces. The Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major by Joseph Haydn, performed by Festival Director Jan Vogler, was long lost until a copy of the parts was found in the Prague National Museum in 1961. The final movement of Gustav Mahler's Fourth Symphony, which is heard in the second part, uses the Wunderhorn poem "Das himmlische Leben" (Heavenly Life) as a kind of image of an otherworldly land of milk and honey. However, there are cracks and breaks in this seemingly heavenly blue firmament, as the powerful-sounding and Mahler-experienced orchestra will impressively demonstrate. The soloist is soprano Ying Fang from Ningbo, China. The singer, who graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory and the Juilliard School in New York, is now a great hit on the world's major opera stages.
