Soil, soul and society

What really sustains life Anyone who takes a sober look at the catastrophic state of the world today can easily fall into despair. Satish Kumar counters this with "non-attachment": simply doing the right thing without fixating on an outcome and combining actionism with meditation and self-care. He draws on his own career from Jain monk, Gandhian activist and pilgrim for peace, follower of Rabindranath Tagore to fellow campaigner of E.F. Schumacher, founder of Schumacher College and long-time editor of the world's leading environmental magazine "Resurgence". This book is the fruit of many years of active action and deep reflection, a beacon of light in dark times. Satish Kumar illustrates Eastern wisdom for the West. He gets to the heart of the matter when he says that caring for the natural environment (soil), maintaining human well-being (soul) and upholding human values (society) are the moral imperatives of our time. This book shows that this holistic vision is rooted in the ancient philosophies of the Hindu, Buddhist and Jain traditions of India, revitalized for our times by Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore. These ideas were brought to the West by E.F. Schumacher with his book Small is beautiful. This book offers a guide to a gentle revolution in our thinking and our way of life.

About the book

"While much of the political and media discussion about the path to a more sustainable society is concerned with technology and politics, there are deeper philosophical and value-based issues that we need to address. Satish Kumar paints a vivid picture of why weneed to look for solutions deep within people. He is a truly holistic thinker, and in this profound book he lays out what we need to see the bigger picture of the path to a more secure, sustainable and resilient future."

Tony Juniper

"Satish brings us another gem of wisdom in Soil, Soul and Society. With humanity on the precipice, we need changes that each of us can make and yet have far-reaching implications for the planet and all people. Soil, Soul and Society gives insights into how wecanmake these changes."
