Program:
Sergei Rachmaninov: "The Great Evening and Morning Praise" op. 37 (excerpts)
Arvo Pärt: "Kanon Pokajanen" (excerpts)
Choral music is deeply rooted in Estonia. One of the best choirs in the Baltic Republic is the multi-award-winning Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir (EPK). In his "Great Morning and Evening Praise", composed in 1915, Sergei Rachmaninov combined the monophonic chants of Russian Orthodox church music with his late Romantic ideas of sound, creating a timeless showpiece full of emotional depth about transience, death and resurrection. The "Kanon Pokajanen", which the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt wrote at the end of the 1990s to mark the 750th anniversary of Cologne Cathedral, fuses elements of minimal art, Gregorian chant and the Eastern church tradition to create an a cappella masterpiece that is perfect for the EPK.
