EVI MÜRLEBACH - "SMILE"
Solo exhibition at H114, Bonn
With "Smile", Evi Mürlebach brings her latest works to H114 Bonn - and invites you to discover the magic of the moment. Her monotypes are created in an exciting interplay of chance, intuition and conscious intervention. No repetition is exactly the same, each trace tells its own story.
Mürlebach's art thrives on movement - not only on paper, but also in its creation. You can sense the influence of theater, performance and staging in her works: figures appear, blur, dissolve, almost like snapshots of a scene that has just been played or is about to begin.
This is particularly impressive in her geliprints, which often portray women with experience of migration and integration. But these images of women have a double layer: the source images come from beauty magazines, from a world of idealized perfection. Through her artistic treatment, Mürlebach radically changes the meaning of these images. The smooth, standardized faces from advertising are alienated, fragmented, dissolved by the printing process - and transformed into expressive, multi-layered portraits of real women with individual stories.
"Smile" is more than just a title - it is a critical examination of expectations, self-images and projections. When do we really smile? When does a smile become a façade? Which faces are made visible in our society - and which are made invisible?
With this exhibition, Evi Mürlebach once again demonstrates her special way of making art: unpredictable, lively, full of expression. An invitation to take a closer look - and to look behind the surface.
