In the 1990s, Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was still considered the next big thing in racing and the highest class, Formula 1. But even as a racing driver, you put your body on the line and ultimately have to expect the worst. For Sonny Hayes, this meant the end of his career as a Formula 1 professional after a serious accident on the racetrack. From then on, he bumbled around in the lower racing classes and, three decades after his fateful accident, kept his head above water as an occasional racing driver, trying to draw on his old Formula 1 reputation. His former team colleague Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem) knows this. He is now the boss of the APXGP team, which seems to be at the bottom of the Formula 1 table without any hope or points. Because Cervantes has almost nothing left to lose, he wants to bring Hayes back into the premier class and, together with rookie Noah Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), form a lifeline for the racing team.
