Bremerhaven hosts international science competition "FameLab" for the first time
Talented scientists from all over Germany use the stage format as a career springboard / Application deadline for preliminary round in Bremerhaven on March 17, 2025
Every year, young researchers from all over the world compete in "FameLab", a science communication competition initiated by the British Cheltenham Science Festival. In front of an audience and jury, the participants have three minutes on stage to explain a scientific topic of their choice as convincingly and engagingly as possible. For many young researchers, "FameLab" has already been a career entry into the world of professional science communication.
This year, Bremerhaven will host the regional preliminary round for the first time on April 2, 2025 at CAPITOL (Hafenstraße 156). In addition, Karlsruhe, Bielefeld, Dresden and Regensburg will each select two winners in further preliminary rounds, who will compete in the final in Bielefeld. The grand German final will take place on June 24, 2025 in front of around 1,000 spectators in the Rudolf-Oetker-Halle in Bielefeld.
Application phase for 2025 started
The application phase for the preliminary rounds is underway. Students studying for a Master's degree, doctoral candidates and young researchers aged 21 and over can take part. Whether medicine, computer science, social work or political science: there is a free choice of topics from the natural and social sciences, technology and medicine. As far as creative aids are concerned, anything that the speakers themselves can carry onto the stage is permitted. Power Point presentations, on the other hand, are prohibited. The registration deadline for the preliminary round in Bremerhaven is March 17, 2025.
The prizes for the preliminary rounds include professional coaching from NaWik (National Institute for Science Communication) and up to 300 euros in prize money. The winner of the national final in Bielefeld will go on to represent Germany on the international stage. In 2024, Bielefeld assistant doctor Julian Neugebauer, who conducts research at Bethel Protestant Hospital, took second place.
