Twilight of the Warriors: Walled in

It is said that when Scott Derrickson was working on DOCTOR STRANGE, he was asked by Marvel to "plus" his ideas for the project. In other words: think a few sizes bigger in terms of action, entertainment and fun. Turn everything up a notch. After the first five minutes of TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN, you could get the impression that director Soi Cheang (LIMBO) had received this memo. Everything about his film adaptation of the cultishly revered graphic novel screams "plus" - it's faster, more furious, cooler, crazier.

The "Walled City" on the Kowloon peninsula near Hong Kong, which was demolished in 1993, was the most densely populated district in the world in the 1980s, with 33,000 people living on an area of just under 2.7 hectares. It now forms the mythical backdrop for an action film that not only refers to the Hong Kong cinema of this era, to John Woo, Ringo Lam, Tsui Hark and Johnnie To, but also condenses the best of the action films of the time into just under two hours: Everything that modern heroic bloodshed has to offer takes place within the narrow confines of the setting. Friendship, betrayal, loyalty, rivalry, honor, life and death. And crazy fight scenes non-stop. Philip Ng Wan-lung choreographs these epic battles in a labyrinth of small dwellings, snaking power lines, dirty alleyways and cold lighting. In the midst of it all, four young outsiders come together to give new urgency to an eternal struggle between two gangster organizations, led by Louis Koo and Sammo Hung, for supremacy in the lawless "Walled City".
