This festival evening in the Liebfrauenkirche also offers the opportunity to get to know an important Indian musical tradition at the highest level of artistic perfection. With her penetrating voice, agile body and passionate dreadlocks swirling through the air, Parvathy Baul has been able to inspire people in over 40 countries over the past decades with the music of the Baul movement: a wandering group of musicians who have been at home in the rural culture of Bengal for centuries and whose art, which combines song and dance, brings together influences from Hinduism and the Muslim-Sufi tradition. At her Eigenzeit performance in Duisburg, Parvathy Baul - who received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the country's highest award for performing artists, from the Indian government in 2019 - will engage in a transcultural musical exchange with musicians from the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra as part of a solo recital. Beforehand, she will give an introduction to the fascinating subject of Baul philosophy and its deeply spiritual practice.
