Toledo-born Diego Ortiz, gambist, composer and maestro de capilla at the viceregal court in Naples from 1553 until his death in 1570, is known today, especially in early music circles, for his textbook Tratato de Glosas on playing the viola da gamba as a remarkable source of Renaissance ornamentation and the improvised practice of the time. However, the fact that he left behind a magnificent collection of sacred works in the form of his Musices Liber Primus from 1565 is largely unknown. Here Diego Ortiz demonstrates masterful polyphony and a synthesis of diverse influences, from the Franco-Flemish school to songs from the Iberian Peninsula. With a selection of polyphonic motets, organ versettas for strings and virtuosically ornamented madrigals, the early music specialists from COMET Musicke paint the portrait of a composer who went to Naples to seek his fortune.
Concert without intermission. Ends at around 21:30.
