Melissa Dullius and Gustavo Jahn have been working with the medium of analog film since 1999. Both originally from Brazil, they moved to Berlin in 2006 and have been working together under the name "Distruktur" ever since. Their films, mostly shot on 16mm, move between documentary observation, narrative staging and personal archive. In addition to the holistic DIY approach to the production of their works, the actual projection, often combined with music or performance, also plays an important role.
"To see things as they really are, you have to reorganize them, play with them and look at them with a certain amount of imagination. We make films to understand more about the world and ourselves. If we succeed in doing that, perhaps others can also find new perspectives on the world and themselves."
Melissa and Gustavo are also founding members of the Berlin-based artist-run film lab LaborBerlin.
As part of the last Film auf Film event of the year, Melissa Dullius will be showing a selection of films by Distruktur on Sunday, December 8th. This will be followed by a discussion about her analog working methods and cinematic-artistic approaches.
There will be both digital and analog projections.
The event series Film auf Film offers filmmakers working with analog material the opportunity to project their works in analog form and to discuss their working methods.
