The monumental drama TAGE DES RUHMS is the most important feature film about the Second World War from an African perspective. It tells the story of four colonial soldiers from the Maghreb who fight for the liberation of Europe from Nazi rule, first in Italy, then in Provence and finally in Alsace.
The film was shown nationwide in cinemas in France and sparked a broad debate about the discrimination against African soldiers in the French armed forces and in the payment of their pensions in the post-war period. Algerian director Rachid Bouchareb also invited veterans from North Africa to the film's premiere in Cannes.
In the documentary JAMAL, RACHID, ROSCHDY, SAMY... DIE ENKEL DER "TIRAILLEURS" , their demonstrative appearance on the red carpet of the film festival can be seen. It also features the encounters of the main actors Sami Bouajila, Jamel Debbouze, Samy Naceri and Roschdy Zem with former colonial soldiers in North Africa. These included Youb Lalleg, for example, who went to war with a regiment of Algerian colonial soldiers in February 1941 and still remembered it very clearly six decades later. He became the model for one of the main characters in the film.
The film screening is part of the program accompanying the exhibition "The Third World in the Second World War" at the NS Documentation Centre. See also The Third World in the Second World War
