Film & Kunst: "Die Giacomettis"

In the "Film & Art" series, Cinema Quadrat and Kunsthalle Mannheim are showing a documentary portrait of a family of artists:

They catch the eye in every exhibition space - the elongated, thread-thin figures of Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti. His life and art have already been the subject of several documentaries - but this film is also dedicated to his father, the painter Giovanni Giacometti, and his highly talented siblings, Diego, Ottilia and Bruno Giacometti. The result is a portrait of a veritable family of artists from a valley in Graubünden, whose members enriched the art of the 19th and 20th centuries in very different ways. While the father created impressionist landscapes in vibrant colors, the sons Diego and Alberto devoted themselves to sculpture, with Diego assisting his older brother Alberto in his Paris studio. Bruno, the youngest of the brothers, became a successful architect. The film also introduces the sister Ottilia Giacometti, who repeatedly acted as a model for both father Giovanni Giacometti and son Alberto, but who herself remained in the classic role of housewife and mother. The result is a cinematic approach to a patriarchal family in which the talents of the men played the leading role.
