This documentary uses impressive archive material and moving testimonies from contemporary witnesses to illustrate why the day the war ended in Europe became a day of mourning in Algeria. On May 8, 1945, in the town of Sétif, French settlers shot at Algerian civilians who were also demanding freedom for their country and carrying a flag of the Algerian independence movement during the celebrations marking the end of the war. The consequences were Algerian protests and French military operations throughout the region, which claimed thousands of victims.

The Algerian director, screenwriter and author Mehdi Lallaoui lives in Paris and is co-founder of the initiative "Au Nom de la Mémoire", which has been dealing with the history of colonization, migration, racism and social movements in publications, films and events since 1990. This also includes public rallies and film screenings to commemorate the dramatic events surrounding May 8, 1945 in Algeria.
